How would high school students perceive a classmate with an intellectual disability in physical and sport education classes?

Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the opinions of students at a bilingual high school regarding the inclusion of a student with an intellectual disability towards physical and sports education classes. With an average age of 15.86±1.34 years for boys and 15.75±1.89 years for girls, the research group included 236 firstto fifth-year students. We used the standardized CAIPE-R questionnaire to collect research data. We discovered that girls, compared to boys, have significantly more favorable perceptions of a student with intellectual disability in inclusive physical and sport education classes. This was demonstrated by significantly more favorable general opinions on inclusion and (U=5371; p=0.002), as well as significantly more favorable opinions on modifying the rules of sports games in inclusive physical and sport education classes (U = 1844; p=0.00).
