Interlingual translation as a mediation activity: current challenges and future perspectives
Abstract
This article explores the role of interlingual translation in foreign language teaching, with a particular focus on French as a Foreign Language (FFL) in Poland. The first part outlines the evolution of the concept and role of translation in foreign language teaching, emphasizing its contemporary perception as a key component of mediation activities. The second part addresses the challenges associated with the practical use of interlingual translation as a tool for mediation. An analysis of textbooks reveals that, when translation is included, it is primarily used to support vocabulary and grammar acquisition. However, this approach does not align with the objectives of communicative or mediation-based teaching methods. Innovative solutions to this issue are presented in the publication 60 activités de médiation linguistique pour la classe de français (2023), which offers practical translation exercises for levels A1 to B2. These activities are grounded in real-life situations, thereby helping students develop both communicative and mediation competencies. In conclusion, the author highlights the need to develop teaching materials—based on such examples—that use interlingual translation more effectively to prepare students for the demands of modern multilingual communication.
