Abstract

This comparative study deals with problematic aspects of Biblical phraseology in Slovak and in Spanish by looking at similarities and differences, as well as difficulties, that may arise in translation. It presents a compilation of expressions and idioms from the Holy Scripture and traces their origin. There is a phraseology of two types: on the one hand there are direct quotes from Biblical verses, and on the other there are those that more freely allude to personalities and toponyms from the Old or New Testaments. The article draws attention to the need to know the Biblical origin of these expressions, because when translating it is necessary to take into account their cultural weight and respect their exact formulation as established by tradition.
