Abstract

History of Slavic Ethnology.

J. Kollár was already attracted in his youth by the melodiousness of the folk songs that he wrote down. During his studies in Jena, he became acquainted with the cult of folk literature of the time and with publishing work among other Slavic nations. In 1823, Písně světské lidu slovenského v Uhřích was published in Pest. The collection was prepared primarily by P. J. Šafárik, with J. Kollár as the organizer and editor. The second volume of the collection (1827) already belonged entirely to J. Kollár. The National Songbooks (Budín 1834, 1835) contain two and a half thousand song texts, which Kollár classified into 21 sections according to related genres. They are among the most significant works of this kind in European dimensions.
