Oral Legend and Media Narrative in the Birth of the U.S. Hippie Subculture
Abstract
How can legend scholarship be applied to the history of a recent subculture and its subsequent mass media representations? Comparing media coverage of the nascent hippie subculture with actual oral histories of participants shows not only factual discrepancies but also thematic contradictions and parallels that point to what contemporary legend scholarship calls legend formation.
